In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. I loved this book. It’s so much more than a ‘road’ book. The writing just flows and the story-telling is compelling.The characters are all fascinating. The physical diversion from the Lincoln Highway are mirrored by the diversions of the narrative into other interesting, tangential by-ways. I think this is his best book to date.
