In 1922 Count Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal. He is sentenced to house arrest in The Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Brimming with humour,

An aristocratic Russian is condemned to house arrest in the 1930s, but in a large cosmopolitan hotel rather than his own home. Contrary to the reader's expectations he finds endless fascination in the occupants and staff, a secret room within his own small quarters, and adventures with a small girl who comes to live in the hotel. An unusual view of Russian life in the 20th century, and of a man who finds humour and charm in all circumstances. Most of our members loved this book. 9/10
