John March is the father of the girls from the classic novel 'Little Women'. Here we see him as abolitionist and idealistic chaplain on the front lines of a war that tests his faith in himself and in the Union. As he recovers from a near-fatal illness, he reassembles his tattered mind and finds a way to reconnect with his family.

A wonderful read. Many themes are covered - war, slavery, abolitionist, and anti-abolitionist movement, but overall, it's about human behaviour, relationships and misunderstandings. Beautifully written, it is a real paper-turner. Be warned, some of the war hospital scenes have gruesome descriptions!
