Hardback:The madness, a memoir of war, fear and PTSD:2022 Hardback

Year: 2022
Language: English
Media class: Hardback
Content type: Bibliography
Publisher: William Collins

Fergal Keane has spent his adult life witnessing war, travelling through dangerous or devastated places and reporting the atrocities back to the rest of the world. In the course of those decades, he has lost friends, sustained injuries and experienced countless near misses. He has patched up colleagues and seen the worst of humanity: mothers robbed of their children and bodies mutilated. Along the way, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He would wake up, full of dread, in the night or have to pull over while driving, his hands shaking and his body threatening vomit. This book is an investigation into Fergal's own mental illness and the disorder that plagues millions.

Hardback:Overreach, the inside story of Putin's war against Ukraine:2022 Hardback
Author: Matthews, Owen
Year: 2022
Language: English
Media class: Hardback
Content type: Bibliography
Publisher: Mudlark
Resource type: Physical
Note: Includes bibliographical references An astonishing investigation into the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war - from the corridors of the Kremlin to the trenches of Mariupol. The Russo-Ukrainian War is the most serious geopolitical crisis since the Second World War - and yet at the heart of the conflict is a mystery. Vladimir Putin apparently lurched from a calculating, subtle master of opportunity to a reckless gambler, putting his regime - and Russia itself - at risk of destruction. Why? Drawing on over 25 years' experience as a correspondent in Moscow, as well as his own family ties to Russia and Ukraine, journalist Owen Matthews takes us through the poisoned historical roots of the conflict, into the Covid bubble where Putin conceived his invasion plans in a fog of paranoia about Western threats, and finally into the inner circle around Ukrainian president and unexpected war hero Volodimir Zelensky.

Hardback:A brief history of the British monarchy, from the Iron Age to King Charles III:2022 Hardback
Author: Black, Jeremy
Year: 2022
Language: English
Media class: Hardback
Publisher: Robinson

Note: The British monarchy is at a turning point. Concise and engaging, this book charts the very beginnings of British reign through to the longest serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II - and looks forward to the reign of King Charles III. Much more than a linear history, this is the intertwined story of royalty and state, of divisions, invasions, rivalries, death and glory; the story of nation fates deeply tied with the personal endeavours of monarchs through the ages. Black expertly weaves together thematic chapters from the origins of monarchy, medieval times and sixteenth-century developments, to the crises of the seventeenth-century, settlement and imperialism, and the challenges of the modern age.

Hardback:My life in food, a memoir:2022 Hardback
Author: Roux, Albert
Year: 2022
Language: English
Media class: Hardback
Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson
Resource type: Physical
Note: In 2021, the world of cooking lost a legendary figure. Albert Roux, together with his brother Michel, transformed the way we eat, cook and appreciate food in this country. It is no exaggeration to say that most of what makes our current culinary landscape so vibrant began with these two brothers and their ground-breaking restaurant, Le Gavroche. Albert first arrived in England in the fifties, at a time of grey and brown food, with a nation still reeling from the effects of war and rationing. Cooking in the grand private houses of the aristocracy, he was to fall in love with the country and, after his military service, which he spent fighting in the Algerian Civil War, he would eventually make it his home for life. He and his brother set up Le Gavroche in 1967. It was to become the first restaurant in the UK to gain first one, and eventually three, Michelin stars.
